LiveNews December 2011
A Year of Partnerships & Participation

Bridge Sessions
We've enjoyed highly successful Bridge Sessions this fall, bringing together even more musicians and students for interactive performances that explore a variety of music and cultures. The numbers speak for themselves:

  • 2 World Cafe Live venues (Philadelphia & Wilmington)
  • 17 musicians from a variety of genres
  • 23 total sessions of 8 themed programs
  • over 2,200 school-age participants from more than 20 different schools

We’ve continued our relationship with The Philadelphia Orchestra’s School Partnership Program (SPP), matching an Orchestra member, SPP teaching artist and LCO artist to create innovative programming and expanding our reach to SPP schools.

But the real reward is consistently hearing from students and teachers how meaningful, educational and downright fun the programs are. Like this comment from a teacher at Pulaski Elementary School in Wilmington: “Our school has different cultures, and I just want the kids to notice all of you [musicians] from different cultures working together and getting along.”

ClassicAlive!
Changing how classical music is experienced by breaking boundaries of repertoire, collaboration and atmosphere, ClassicAlive! events have proved to be a winning endeavor! This fall we enjoyed outstanding performances by the Dolce Suono Trio with percussionist Gabriel Globus-Hoenich, Network for New Music with spoken word poet Lamont Dixon, Sixth Floor Trio, and the Serafin String Quartet. We hope you’ll join us for upcoming events in Philadelphia and Wilmington!

Collaborative Connections
Coming soon! We’re currently working out the logistics and developing partnerships to implement our new simulcast initiative, designed to connect new audiences—particularly those unable to travel to the venue—to exceptional music programming. Stay tuned for details.

New to the LCO Team
In November, we welcomed Melinda Steffy as General Manager, LCO’s first full-time staff position. Melinda previously worked for The Music School of Delaware and brings a breadth of experience in nonprofit education and arts management. She will serve as LCO’s primary contact person, so feel free to get in touch with her with any questions or to become involved with LCO. [melinda@liveconnections.org]

Galea McGregor has joined the LCO team as the Collaborative Connections Producer. She was previously the in-house producer for 44 Pictures in NYC, working on documentary and live concert video projects with artists from John Mayer to My Morning Jacket.

In addition, Stephen Barnes joined the LCO board this fall and is serving as treasurer. He is Chief Financial Officer of Energy Plus, a provider of electricity and natural gas to residential and business consumers. And we’re joined this academic year by a new intern, Ben Bruckman, who is currently enrolled in Penn’s nonprofit leadership program.
